Italy is one of Europe's earliest countries to develop distributed photovoltaic markets, the existing PV installation capacity is lead the pack in Europe. Sunways, as a German-originated inverter manufacturer, the reliability and performance of products have been proven highly recognized and appreciated by customers in Europe.
1. Project Overview
In Udine, a 6.6MW big-scale solar system has been in use for 11 years since 2011, and now it got a chance to be renewed due to the bad performance caused by inverter aging or broken.
This retrofit project started in December 2020 and expected to install 552pcs Sunways STT12KTL three-phase inverters. It has installed 250 units till now and the total project expected to be finished In December 2021 according to the latest feedback from the constructor. After completion of this project, it will bring a total energy generation of 9.87GWh per year, which equals 10008.18 Tons carbon dioxide reduction and 3849.3 Tons of coal savings.

2. Product Highlights
As an Italian supplier of complete photovoltaic systems with over 25 years of experience, we chose Sunways as our main partner for their premium inverters. Sunways is a German-originated inverter company with 28 years of high-quality inverter development and manufacturing experience and in cooperation with them worked on retrofitting this project with their new generation three-phase 12kW inverter featured a series of industry-leading technologies such as 1.6times DC to AC ratio, 1.1 times consecutive AC overloading ability and multiple protection mechanisms, the project constructor manager said. Two MPPT trackers essentially allow the inverter to treat the array as two separate systems, ensuring higher versatility, better efficiency and more effective space use.

3. Project Influence
Italy does not only possess ideal irradiation, but also favorable wind conditions, which allow the cooling of solar modules, reducing losses due to the thermal effect. Italy itself has achieved more than 20,100 MW of PV installation by December 2018, but the growth rate has fallen since 2013 with less than 500 MW of annual capacity additions, this means many of the solar installations were built before 2013. Considering the regular lifespan of solar inverters installed before 2015 mostly carry a 5 years warranty but the PV panels carry a longer lifespan over 20 years. In this circumstance, we believe the retrofit PV market is on the horizon in Italy. When the inverter working performance seriously affects the PV system yield, it will gradually become a trend to renovate the original low-efficiency PV projects. This trend helps to promote a new round of PV installation outbreaks in Italy and even other markets in Europe. Sunways inverters have become the first choice in the retrofit project market with the excellent product quality, strong active adaptability to the power grid and support for a variety of non-standard installation methods. The success of this project will become a benchmark of Sunways in the Italian retrofit project and will have great demonstration significance for our subsequent development of other retrofit projects and new projects.
4. Future Outlook
More and more European players investing in solar development across Italy, the existing number of operational PV plants in Italy is only second to Germany – there are a lot of older plants that are looking to be repowered in the coming years. Italy is aiming to increase the PV market share to more than 50 GW by 2030 according to Italy’s National Energy Strategy for 2030. And the current pace of solar power growth in Italy makes it difficult to achieve the 2030 goal, so we believe in the near future, Italian government will release more policies to stimulate the solar market. With more and more Sunways inverters used in big-scale solar projects, we believe Sunways will make great success in Italy sooner or later.
